Lo: to use pointillist techniques when painting

Year 3 used cotton buds and paintbrushes to paint dots to create their paintings. They used the tips of their brushes as well as the end. All these methods created different effects. Still very much a work in progress.

Year 3 completed their Pointillist artwork. It has taken some time to do as they worked carefully and have a greater understanding of how much time it takes. It took Seurat two years to completed the painting: La grande Jatte. Some amazing work. Well done Year 3.

Year 3 continued with their Felix Feneon pointillist backgrounds. Their work is coming along nicely, but as the children have found, time and patience is required.

Year 3 continued with looking at Pointillist artists, especially the work of Paul Signac. They looked the painting of a French art critic, Felix Feneon. They were then given a template of the painting and started to create their own patterned pointillist background using felt tips.

Year 3 looked at a few of Seurat’s artwork, focusing on how he used shading. They discovered that if they used dots close to each other the colours appeared darker and if they were further apart, the colour appeared lighter. They then practised this type of of shading in their books.

Year 3 looked at how Seurat used colours in his work. They found out that Seurat instead of mixing new colours,Seurat used a variety of different colours together. He found out that the eye mixed the colours, called optical mixing. They then found out about complementary colours, using them and a few different ones to practise optical colour mixing.

Year 3 looked at the painting: A Sunday on the Grande Jatte in great detail. They discussed what they found out about George’s Seurat and Pointillism last week. They then looked very carefully at the painting, looking for different items.

Year 3 started a new topic today. They looked found out about George’s Seurat and Pointillism. They watched a video looking at the technique used to paint pointillist art. After that they used an information sheet to complete a fact file about Seurat.

Lo: to use a printing block to print patterns

Year 3 took their printing blocks which they had made last week and applied paint to the raised string area. They then placed it onto their page, pressing down firmly. After they had made their print, they reapplied paint and repositioned it to create a repeated print pattern.

Year 3 each made their own printing block, using card and string. They drew their design onto the card and then glued the string into position.
